Packing correctly for a Kenya safari makes an enormous difference to your comfort and experience on the ground. Here is our definitive guide developed over 15 years of guiding clients in East Africa.
Clothing
Safari clothing should be neutral-coloured โ khaki, olive, beige and tan are ideal. Avoid blue and black which attract tsetse flies in some areas. Pack light, breathable fabrics for the day and a warm fleece for early morning drives which can be surprisingly cold even in summer.
Essentials
A good pair of binoculars (8ร42 or 10ร42) will transform your safari experience โ you will see far more detail at distance. Sunscreen with high SPF is essential. A headlamp is invaluable at camps. Most camps provide laundry so pack light.
Camera Gear
For photography, a telephoto lens of 400mm or longer is ideal for wildlife. A bean bag for stabilising shots on the vehicle roof is often more useful than a monopod. Bring multiple memory cards and extra batteries.
Health & Safety
Consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis at least six weeks before departure. A yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from certain countries. Comprehensive travel insurance including emergency evacuation is essential.
